Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa, and is the country’s oldest and second-largest city, after Johannesburg. The city is part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality.
Because it was the site of the first European settlement in South Africa, Cape Town is known as the country’s “mother city”. It served as the gateway to Europe’s penetration of the South African interior, and close ties with continental Europe are still maintained.
Cape Town is a modern, cosmopolitan city surrounded by nature, strikingly beautiful and separated by a barrier of mountains. The mother City is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning biodiversity, award-winning food and wine, and sheer variety of experiences on offer.
Centred around Table Mountain, its unique topography offers a range of activities, from mountain climbing to windsurfing and sun bathing and wine tasting. But Cape Town’s real draw is its vibrant multiculturalism.
Here, one can watch Zulu groups singing and dancing as you shop and dine at the V&A Waterfront; mingle with Cape Town’s Muslim community in Bo-Kaap; and party European-style in cool clubs around Greenpoint.
