Sets or retrieves the data-entry mode to which the DetailsView control returns after an update, insert, or cancel operation.

Syntax


Script [ DetailsViewMode var = ] DetailsView.DefaultMode

Property Value


var One of the DetailsViewMode values.

The property is read/write with a default value of ReadOnly.

Exceptions


Exception Type Condition
ArgumentOutOfRangeException The specified value is not one of the DetailsViewMode enumeration values.

Remarks

Use the DefaultMode property to specify whether the DetailsView control returns to edit, insert, or read-only mode after an update, insert, or cancel operation is performed.

By default, the DetailsView control returns to read-only mode; however, you can keep the DetailsView control in edit or insert mode by setting this property to the appropriate value. The following table lists the different mode values.

Mode Description
DetailsViewMode.Edit The DetailsView control is in edit mode, which allows the user to update the values of a record.
DetailsViewMode.Insert The DetailsView control is in insert mode, which allows the user to add a new record to the data source.
DetailsView.ReadOnly The DetailsView control is in read-only mode, which is the normal display mode.

This property is commonly used when the DetailsView control has a single purpose, such as only to insert or edit records.
